Who is Rob Spence?

If you don’t live in Switzerland and you just stumbled upon the Comedy Crash Course, you might be wondering: “wait a minute… Rob who? And what’s that got to do with Switzerland?”

Rob started his career in comedy in 1984 in Sydney Australia as a street performer. He quickly became a regular at “Sydney’s Comedy Store”. From his physical comedy and stand-up, he created his first solo show “Comedy Madness”, which he toured on the streets of America and Europe. While touring, he met Silvie, from Switzerland, who would become his wife (hence the Swiss connection).

In 1991, after a successful performance at the Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland, Rob was invited to play at the legendary Criterion Theater in London’s West end. A few months later he opened the television gala of “Just for Laughs” in Montreal, Canada, together with the comedy legend Milton Berle. After a tour throughout North America, he returned to Europe and set up base. TV appearances, performances in variety shows and festivals followed.

Rob’s first big break came in 1993 when he appeared in Freiburg, Germany, at Europe’s largest theatrical showcase. Rob rocked the house and walked away with contracts for shows in 130 theaters. In the following years he perfected his performances in French, German and Italian and became one of the most active comedians on the European television and live comedy scene.

Rob returned to Australia via Los Angeles in 1996, where he appeared in comedy clubs and festivals. He toured for the next two years around Australia with his friend and mentor, the cult Aussie comedian Col Elliot.

After hosting the comedy festival “Züri lacht” in 1998, Rob’s popularity rose rapidly in Switzerland and he secured his own TV show “Rob’s Comedy Club”. For the next two years he hosted 44 shows in which he presented German-speaking stars and the best international comedians from over 20 different countries.

In 2001 Rob joined the very successful German TV show «Die Wochenshow» on SAT1. He took part in the “Wochenshow live tour” and performed in stadiums of 12,000 spectators all over Germany..

In 2003 Rob focused again on his live solo shows. With his new program “Homer’s Odyssey” and toured it around Europe with great success.

In 2006 Rob performed at the Edinburgh fringe festival in Scotland, with his new show “Body language”. Since then he has been touring Europe with his solo shows “KangaMoooo”, “Tough Guy”, “Beastly” and “Mad Man”. In 2019 he received a life time achievement award at the Arosa Comedy festival in Switzerland.

At the moment Rob is touring his Best Of program around Switzerland.

Rob has been coaching and mentoring newcomers since over 20 years. He loves watching them fulfill their dreams of becoming a professional comedian. Many comics with a lot of potential do not manage to get to the next level in their comedy career, because they’re missing the perspective of a seasoned coach.
